Rebecca Coulston Bachtell was born in 1744 in Hanover Township, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania near Sanatoga which was once called Crooked Hill, in what is now Lower Pottsgrove Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. Her parents were Henry Coulston and Rebecca Braun.

She married Samuel Bachtell. Their children and life together are described in detail in the section on Samuel and Margaret Bachtell

Montgomery County, in southeast Pennsylvania was created on September 10, 1784, out of land that was originally part of Philadelphia County.
